Frankists in Offenbach 1788 and the 1845 Nauvoo Independence Day Protest

1788

Historical Document

Description

Two historical sources for the Theology and Politics horses. FIRST: The Frankist settlement at Isenburg Castle in Offenbach. In 1788, Jakob Frank, leader of the Frankist sect, arrived at Isenburg Castle in Offenbach am Main, Germany. He established a Polenhof, a Polish court, with several hundred followers. The account highlights the role of his daughter, Eva Romanovna, and her alleged ties to the Russian Tsarist court as a means of securing aristocratic validation for the movement. The Offenbach settlement in 1788 places the Frankist diaspora in Germany at the same time period when the Flubacher and Merten families were in the Siegen-Wittgenstein region. The geographic proximity between Offenbach and Siegen-Wittgenstein is approximately 100 kilometers. Source: Braun, Lothar R. City of Offenbach am Main. SECOND: On the Fourth of July, 1845, the Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo held a silent protest, refusing to celebrate Independence Day. They cited governmental failure to protect minority rights. This marked a significant fracture in their national identity and served as a precursor to the exodus from the United States. This documents the institutional break between the LDS Church and the American government that provided the historical context for the 1840 Joseph Smith sermon about the Constitution hanging by a thread. The protest was the lived expression of the theological framework that would later be formalized into the White Horse Prophecy. Source: Dirkmaat, Gerrit J. Too Long Trampled on to Be Celebrated.
