Psychiatrist and author of the foundational 1961 text 'Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of Brainwashing in China' (DOCUMENTED). Studied Chinese communist brainwashing techniques in the 1950s. His work was heavily utilized to help deprogram individuals like Steven Hassan from high-control groups. Established the 'Eight Criteria for Thought Reform' to evaluate psychological coercion and social influence within totalistic environments: (1) Milieu Control — control of information and environment; (2) Mystical Manipulation; (3) Demand for Purity; (4) Cult of Confession; (5) Sacred Science; (6) Loading the Language — using thought-terminating cliches; (7) Doctrine Over Person; (8) Dispensing of Existence.
