Joseph Smith Papers volume editor who documented the Whistling and Whittling Brigade in the Journal of Mormon History (2017). His research documents that Mormon intimidation tactics consisted of having deacons follow undesirables while whistling and whittling with bowie knives. Initially composed of adult men, by mid-April 1845 the companies became dominated by youth, some as young as twelve.
