Bio Notes

Professor of Sociology at Davidson College and president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. Author of the Commonweal Magazine review (October 13, 2025) of John G. Turner's biography of Joseph Smith. His review confirms the three-layer thesis from outside the LDS ecosystem, stating that revelation for Smith was not only a mode of communion with God but a tool of governance.
