Steven Hassan
Role
Deprogrammer and author of the BITE model
Bio Notes
Career arc documents a practitioner-laundering pattern matching Zimbardo's ONR-to-bad-barrel sanitization. The arc runs from Roselle-directed deprogramming, documented in a 1991 affidavit where the subject was bound for three days with sleep deprivation and threats of chemical injection, through Kelley 1977 windowless-room deprogramming, then from deprogramming to exit counseling to the BITE model and clinical respectability. The legal record travels with the model: Fishman 1990 where brainwashing defense was ruled inadmissible in federal court, Kendall v Kendall 1996 where Hassan's testimony was given little or no weight, ECHR 2010 where no accepted mind-control definition was established, and Gutheil's Social Influence Model critique. The BITE model itself carries Information Control receipts from the archive's GTE arc, with Mann noting BITE labels the LDS church as labelable. The both-edges caution: the CESNUR and NRM-defense critique side, including Fielding 2020 selection-bias critique, stands as adjacent caution. Neither edge erases the other. Standing directive from Alexa: Hassan appears on the site as documented work and story, no glorification. No renowned cult expert or clinical-respectability framing without the career arc attached. No titles that smooth the deprogramming record. Personal feelings toward him stay off the site. The site carries neither glorification nor pity, clean bands only.
