Bio Notes
The names man of the open 1875 investigation, Devon's find, first pass web-verified. Congregationalist clergyman born August 15, 1817 in East Machias, Maine, died June 16, 1887 at Somerset, Massachusetts, a different Somerset than Alexa's Somerset County Pennsylvania, noted honestly and held, not inflated. Amherst 1836, Andover 1838, studied in Germany at Halle and Berlin in 1847. Professor at Bowdoin, then Union Theological Seminary New York from 1855, holding the Washburn professorship and serving as its president 1880 to 1887. His corpus is meaning-mapping, the house's own craft mass-sold into western Pennsylvania homes: the Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible (1869), which re-arranged all 31,173 verses of the Bible by meaning into 27 subject books; Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary (1869), still in print, hosted on CCEL, one of the most-used name-meanings references in English for a century and a half; Socialism (1879); Carmina Sanctorum (1885), a hymnal; and the Life of Edward Robinson (1863). His New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible, 1875, published by A. J. Johnson and Son of New York with the regional subscription agent W. D. Cummings of 64 Grant Street, Pittsburg, was sold in western Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh territory that includes the Somerset County corridor, the Phillippi-Blubaugh home ground. Son: Commander Roswell D. Hitchcock Jr., US Navy, married to author and explorer Mary Evelyn Hitchcock. Investigation opened per Alexa's direction: the point is to investigate it, not to shelf it for lack of information. Open questions: the Hitchcock family's Somerset tie and whether the Family Record pages of the found copy hold names.
